Don was born into a family of engineers (father, three brothers and brother-in-law all engineers), after failing at a different occupation, joined them. National service in Royal Engineers, worked for Supermarine and Vickers-Armstrong Aircraft. Moved into education and teaching mainly in the engineering departments of technical colleges.
Don is a reluctant, unambitious (i.e. idle) writer. Does not understand poetry but likes rhyme and rhythm.
